2022 has been a lousy year for Amazon stockholders. With the share price cut in half, it was the worst year since 2000 and the second worst year ever. Mega-cap tech stocks were down significantly, but 2022 was especially bad for Amazon, which had a worse year than its peers except for Meta (Facebook, Instagram, etc.) or Tesla.
This drop removed Amazon from the list of companies with a market capitalization above $1 trillion. However, the size of the fall is partly due to the souring macro-economic environment in which investors have moved from growth plays into companies with high-profit margins and dividends to combat inflation.
